Night Sky Photography -- 11-29-2019 -- Young Moon, Saturn, Venus & Jupiter

Good evening fellow stargazers!

As I promised in my previous night sky blog post yesterday, I was going to get a shot of the Young Moon as it moved next to Saturn in the sky the day after Thanksgiving.

I managed to get two outstanding shots -- one of which shows the three wanderers and the Young Moon with a train engine in the foreground. The second is a close-up shot of Saturn and the Young Moon together.

Both shots I think turned out really well even though it was still a bit early and the planets were somewhat faint to the naked eye. All the same I hope y'all enjoyed them.

Night Sky Photography -- 11-28-2019 -- Young Moon, Venus, Jupiter & Saturn On Thanksgiving Evening

Today, its Thanksgiving Day here in the United States. A time for family to gather together and count our blessings -- or more likely gossip and talk about politics and watch American football games on television.

For this blogger this day was also a perfect clear evening of planetary photography. Tonight I was able to capture a wonderful trio of planets with the beautiful Young Moon just above bright Venus and fainter Jupiter and Saturn just 35 minutes, or so, after sunset.

The planets Venus and Jupiter are respectively the third and fourth brightest celestial objects in the night sky after the sun and moon. Saturn is no slouch in brightness either in the early evening. While Jupiter is nine times brighter than Saturn, while Venus is about seven times brighter than Jupiter -- some 63 times brighter than Saturn; the ringed giant planet still shines as brilliantly as a 1st-magnitude star -- one of the brightest stars visible in Earth’s night sky.

The crescent of the Young Moon can be seen just above Venus in line between Jupiter and Saturn along the ecliptic -- the orbit of Earth around the sun, or from our perspective here on Earth, the line the sun takes across the sky during the daytime.

By tomorrow, Friday, November 29th, Luna will travel higher into the sky and appear just beside faint Saturn. Hopefully I will be able to snap a photo of this event for y'all.

Until next time have a wonderful Dixie evening, a Happy Thanksgiving Day, and keep looking to the night skies, y'all.

George Washington's Thanksgiving Day Proclamation 1789 -- America's First Thanksgiving Day

The Prayer At Valley Forge by Arnold Friberg (1976).

Exactly 230 years ago today in American history, President George Washington issued the following proclamation on Saturday, October 3, 1789, designating Thursday, November 26th of that year as a national day of thanks.

In his proclamation, Washington declared that the necessity for such a day sprung from the Almighty’s care of Americans prior to the Revolution, assistance to them in achieving independence, and help in establishing the constitutional government.

George Washington was the first United States president to issue a Thanksgiving proclamation. This was the first official American Thanksgiving Day as a nation under the US Constitution.

Thanksgiving Proclamation
New York, 3 October 1789

By the President of the United States of America, a Proclamation.

Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor -- and whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me "to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness."

Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be -- That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks -- for his kind care and protection of the People of this Country previous to their becoming a Nation—for the signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of his Providence which we experienced in the course and conclusion of the late war—for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty, which we have since enjoyed -- for the peaceable and rational manner, in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national One now lately instituted -- for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed; and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and in general for all the great and various favors which he hath been pleased to confer upon us.

And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to pardon our national and other transgressions -- to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually -- to render our national government a blessing to all the people, by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed -- to protect and guide all Sovereigns and Nations (especially such as have shewn kindness unto us) and to bless them with good government, peace, and concord -- To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us -- and generally to grant unto all Mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best.

Given under my hand at the City of New York the third day of October in the year of our Lord 1789.

My Top 20 Favorite Disney's Zootopia Memes -- Nick & Judy

Good evening y'all!

There is no doubt about it, Disney's 2017 animated film, Zootopia, is currently my top favorite Disney animated film to date. The movie is beautifully animated, has a gorgeous soundtrack, and features what has to be one of my top 10, or so, favorite animated odd "couples" ever: Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde.

Since the release of the film two years ago, many fans of the movie have shipped these two characters; not just as law enforcement partners, but also as uh, romantic partners. Yeah, the amount of awkward fanart and fanfiction shipping these two characters is truly impressive in its volume....not to mention a tad bit creepy in some respects to its uh, attention to detail let's put it that way.

All the same, while I haven't delved into any such artwork, or fanfiction, its easy from repeated viewing of the film to begin to see a possible growing romantic relationship forming between the two characters in the way their friendship developed over the course of the film. Yeah its safe to say that I personally like the ship myself. Still above all it is their dynamic as partners solving crimes which continues to be my focus for their characters. Nick and Judy are just wonderfully developed characters with distinct and likable personalities.

Because of their immense popularity, these two characters have been the subject of some really outstanding memes over the last two years. I collected a few of them and found myself wanting to share my top 20 favorite ones.

The following are my Top 20 Favorite Nick & Judy Zootopia Memes:

(20)
It was at this moment that Judy and Nick knew they screwed up.

This is why I always use the self-checkout whenever possible.

(13)
Yeah that's about 98% of Zootopia fandom right there.

(12)
That and I really hoped that neither of them had a full bladder.

(11)
Awww.

(10)
Uh yeah, maybe y'all should just let this one go.

(9)
Yeah, uh wrong Disney movie there, Nick.

(8)
Nick and Judy are going to be a thing.

Gateway Conference Center Jingle Bell Bazaar 11-16-2019

Greetings and Salutations, Y'all!

After what felt like a week of cold, rainy weather and the first real cold front of the coming winter season, your favorite blogger was able to leave the house on Saturday, November 16th and travel down SC 9 to the neighboring town of Richburg, South Carolina to visit the Jingle Bell Bazaar at the outstanding Gateway Conference Center.

The Jingle Bell Bazaar features a number of local vendors and artisans displaying and selling off some really beautiful holiday handicrafts. The event also includes a bake sale and raffling off of merchandise, with all money going to local charitable causes.

Here are some photo I took from the event and the remarkable items on display. Enjoy.

My thanks to all of these artists and local craftspeople for the time and effort they put into this outstanding display of holiday spirit. I hope all of y'all enjoyed my photos. Let me know what y'all think in the comments below.

Thank you and y'all have a wonderful Dixie Day!
