Female Hairy Woodpecker Enjoying My Suet Feeder

Hello fellow birdwatchers!

Yesterday, I saw this beautiful little lady stopping over to feed on some of my remaining suet in my back yard and was able to capture these great shots from my kitchen window.

The Hairy Woodpecker (Leuconotopicus villosus) is a medium-sized black and white woodpecker that is found over a large area of North America from Alaska and Canada to Mexico and Central America. The male of the species is distinct with a small patch of red feathers on the head, while the female has no red patch, only the distinctive black and white feather patterns.

They are particularly fond of suet and so this lovely girl showed up about noonday to enjoy a few bites.
