As for how many actually carried a rifle and shot at Yankee invaders, that would probably fall under perhaps half that (and remember we are talking about three separate Theaters of war and three separate Southern armies over a course of four years here). That's not to say that the Black Southern men (or any other for that matter) who preformed those service jobs who never fired a shot don't count as Confederate veterans, or that their service counts for less on account of that.

The historical record suggests that there were a large number of ethnic minorities that served in the Confederate military (Native Americans, Hispanic, Jewish, and yes Black Southern loyalists) throughout the four years of the war (and for the Union too I might point out). American military history is not a whites only social club as we've come to accept in recent decades. This blogger will reflect that truth out of the belief that no man (or woman) who served should ever be forgotten, but I cannot in good conscience promote propaganda. I will tell the truth as I know it to be, and I will certainly argue strongly against anyone who says these men are not Confederate veterans.

Besides the truth is far more interesting and does a better job of honoring these Southern veterans of color like Private Henry Brown.
